Archibald and his data is very difficult to nail down & hard to differentiate between several other Archibalds who may be cousins, etc. I have seen him referred to as "Archibald the Appraiser" and he MAY have served in the Revolutionary War.

John H. Gwathmey, "Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution; Soldier-Sailors-Marines; 1775-1783," Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1996 has the following entries:

1. "Elliot, Archibald, of Augusta, E" (the E denotes that the entry was originally found in the "Index of the Revolutionary records in the Virginia State Archives," compiled by Dr. H. J. Eckenrode in 1912 & 1914)., p 252.

2. "Elliott. Archibald. Corp., 9 CL. ("9 CL" denotes that he served in the Ninth Virginia Regiment, Continental Line.), p.253.

[UPDATE 3.3.2024: THIS RECORD IS REFERRING TO A SON, ARCHIBALD RICHARD ELLIOTT, WHO SERVED AS A COLONEL IN THE 9TH VIRGINIA REGIMENT]

He married Sarah Clark in Feb of 1748 in Augusta, VA. She is the daughter of James & Elizabeth (Summers) Clark and sister of Jane Clark, who married William Elliott, brother of Archibald.... another example of siblings marrying siblings.

I have been hesitant to add dates for him. What I do know for certain and can document is posted here. I am doing another round of researching for records concerning him ... 2/9/2017

Name: Archibald Elliott

Date: 15 Oct 1755

Location: Augusta Co., VA

Property: 213 acres on Little River in Calfpasture.

Notes: This land record was originally published in "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, 1745-1800. Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County" by Lyman Chalkley.

Remarks: 55. Delivered to Jno. Graham Sep 1762

Description: Grantor

Book: 7-205

On March 18, 1758, he gave William Elliott power of attorney to sell his property along the Jackson River in Augusta Co., VA.

This land MAY be a part of "Calf Pasture" that his father owned, that later became part of Rockbridge Co.

"Archibald was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, 9th Virginia Regiment. He was a soldier in Captain John Hayes' Company and fought in the battle of Germantown, which is where Archibald lost his life while in battle".

[UPDATE 3.3.2024: The 1758 deed referenced in the note above designate William Elliott as one of two trustees, but it does not mention the relationship of this William Elliott. More than likely, this was a brother, and not a father, to Archibald Elliott. Additionally, the Archibald referenced as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, 9h Virgina Regiment, is referring to his son, Archibald Richard Elliott, who served as a Colonel in that regiment.]

He may have passed between 1775-1777 and most likely in Anson Co., NC.

Possible dates for passing:

4 Oct 1777

[UPDATE 3.3.2024: Regarding multiple Archibald Elliotts, there are distinctly three: (1) In Augusta County, Virginia early records, this Archibald Elliott is active in the area from as early as 1749 and up until we see the above-referenced Feb. 1758 deed which Archibald references that he was then a resident of Anson County, NC, and that he was appointing as his trustees to handle the sale of his Augusta VA land, James Clark and William Elliott. (ii) Next, we have an Augusta County VA will of William Elliott, who died in 1771, which references a young son named Archibald, who Willam wanted to be 'schooled' in a trade, suggesting this was a teenaged boy. That Archibald is noted to have served in the War and died at Germantown PA. (iii) Next, we have Colonel Richard Elliott, who is cross-referenced in the War records as 'Archibald', so Colonel Richard Elliott is also Colonel Archibald Elliott -- his name was likely Archibald Richard Elliott, and he is likely the son of this Archibald Elliott.]
