Mr. James Malcolm McHargue Sr., 69, of Tallahassee, Fla., died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at his home.

Funeral services at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Thomasville Road Baptist Church, 3131 Thomasville Road in Tallahassee, with the Rev. Bruce Ferris and the Rev. Frank Woodrich officiating.

Born Oct. 29, 1938, in Colquitt County, he was the son of the late Magnus Venable McHargue and Clytie Mae Sloan McHargue. He was a 1956 graduate of Moultrie High School and served in the United States Army. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1960 at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., his master of arts in 1966 at Florida State University in Tallahassee, and then continued his doctoral studies in rehabilitation counseling from 1966-1970. He moved to Tallahassee in 1963, where he taught at Cobb Junior High School until completing his master's degree. He was then associated with the State of Florida Division of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1966-1996, holding positions from rehabilitation counselor to bureau chief of client services. In 1999, he was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush as director of the Division of Disability Determination in the Department of Health. He was recently presented with a Social Security Administration Regional Commissioner's Outstanding Leadership Award. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 937, the Nature Conservancy and First Presbyterian Church of Moultrie.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marcia Taylor McHargue of Tallahassee, Fla.; one son, James Malcolm "Jamie" McHargue Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla.; one daughter, Marcia Anna "Marci" McHargue Kirkland of Tallahassee, Fla.; one sister, Kay McHargue Downey and husband Wayne of Glenco, Ala.; two grandchildren, Marcia Taylor "Maci" Kirkland and Mason Gage Kirkland, both of Tallahassee, Fla.; uncle and aunt, Melvin H. and Jodie C. Sloan of Funston, Ga.; two nephews, Roy Anderson Downey II of Marietta, Ga., and Scott Magnus Downey of Jackson, Miss.
