From the Reno Evening Gazette, Apr. 27, 1932:

"College Head's Career Ended:
The Rev. John P. McNichols, S.J., president of the University of Detroit since 1921, died last night from the effects of a breakdown suffered several months ago. He was fifty-seven. The breakdown was attributed to years of unremitting work in developing the university into one of the middle west's major educational institutions.
Born in St. Louis, MO, he became an instructor at St. Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1898. He was ordained in the priesthood in 1906. He was dean of Marquette University, Milwaukee, from 1919 until he assumed the presidency of the University of Detroit two years later.
Under his administration, an entirely new $10,000,000 plant was built for the Detroit institution.
He was the author of textbooks on fundamental English which are in wide use."

Jesuit Father Dr. John Patrick McNichols, S.J., was the son of Henry and Mary McNichols of St. Louis, MO.
