Democratic Member of the South Carolina Senate. Former member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was a senior pastor at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston. Pinckey was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly in 1996 at the age of 23, becoming the youngest African American elected as a South Carolina state legislator. He was killed in a mass shooting at his church. Senator Pinckney, a resident of Ridgeland, leaves behind his wife, Jennifer Benjamin Pinckney and daughters, Eliana Evette and Malana Elise.

He is also survived by his fathers, John Pinckney and Lyneair Aikens, Sr.; his beloved mother-in-law, Cleo M. Benjamin and father-in-law, Frank Benjamin; siblings, Ralph Stevenson, Carmelleana Dupont, Kenya (Arica) Pinckney, Lyneair Aikens, Jr., Marvin Aikens and Johnette (Dexter) Martinez; and one brother-in-law, Eric (Leila) Benjamin, great-aunts, uncles, cousins, a large extended family and very many friends and colleagues. Reverend Pinckney is predeceased by his mother, Theopia Stevenson Aikens.
