First married at age 14 to Hiram Lewis (or Louis) Curtis, almost 20 years her senior, Maggie journeyed with her husband to Louisiana right after her Justice of the Peace marriage at her parents' home in Red Wing, MN. Their only child, Hiram Lewis Curtis (Jr.) was born nine months after the wedding, on 21 Jan, 1861 in Alexandria, LA. When Civil War erupted, Hiram became a private in the 3rd LA Infantry Co. G. When captured during Grant's siege of Vicksburg (on May 17 or 18, 1863 at Haine's Bluff), he claimed to have been born in Ohio and asked to take the oath of allegiance to the U.S. Maggie made her way alone (with their young son) back to her parents' home in Red Wing after her husband was "conscripted" (according to a Union document concerning him). Hiram died in a POW camp in Elmira NY on 21 Nov, 1864. Maggie's family story says that she never heard from him after the war or learned his fate.
In Red Wing, Maggie married a second time, to John (or Joseph - but known as Jack) Harrison (1847-1905), on 3 July 1866. They had 7 children between 1868 and 1877, 5 girls and 2 boys. Her first child Hiram was raised with this family until he left on his own as a teenager.
Maggie died of "inflammation of the bowels" at the age of 33 years, 11 months. Doctor Phil Skillman attended to Maggie during her illness. Her first child Hiram Curtis was on his own at age 17 at the time but Maggie left six young Harrison children, ages 2 to 11, and her widower Jack remarried just three months after Maggie's death.
Maggie is buried beside her parents and her brother Henry in the Jordan family plot in Oakwood Cemetery, in Red Wing.
