James served as a Private First Class, Company B, 583rd Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Madison County, Alabama prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 1, 1942 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Checker and also as Married.

James died in the "Line Of Duty" when the C-47A "Sure Skin" (#42-23860), on which he was a passenger, apparently caught fire and exploded for an unknown reason and crashed in the San Pedro Bay close to Leyte during bad weather.

This crash occurred 4 days after World War II had ended.

The entire crew of 4 and all 26 passengers perished on this flight.
