Christian was named for his Revolutionary War veteran grandfather who after the war pioneered from NC to Owens Township Indiana. According to the 1850 census, Christian was first a tanner in Owen Township, IN but later became a prosperous farmer with 800 acres, part of which had been farmed by his father-in-law. This was the trade he followed the rest of his life. In his 40s he was called to duty and enlisted 10/8/1861 as a corporal in Co. A, 50th Indiana Infantry Reg. which was commanded by his brother-in-law, Captain Samuel Thornton Wells (Later promoted to Lt. Col.) He received a discharge for a disability on 11/18/1862. The 1870 census lists his assets as $6,385.00 real and $2,385 personal property. He had a large family of 13 children and belonged to the Baptist Church. He passed away in the home of his son, William T. Branaman.
