William Overton was the son of Enoch Overton (1831-1895) and Elizabeth Ann "Betsy" Rhea (1830-about 1860), both natives of Tennessee.

William's parents were married on October 18, 1851 in Anderson County, Tennessee, as verified by Tennessee State Marriage Records. Within the next two years, they apparently moved to Missouri as William's death certificate shows he was born in Ray County, Missouri in 1852.

William was the only child of his parents. His mother died sometime after his birth and before 1860. This fact is known because the 1860 census of Mercer County, Missouri, shows Enoch Overton, age 35 (should be 29) with his 7-year-old son William and no wife/mother in the home. It is currently unknown where Elizabeth died, whether in Ray County where they were married or in Mercer County, and it is unknown where she is buried.

On March 23, 1862 in Mercer County, Missouri, William's father, Enoch, remarried to Lucy Albina Lindsey (1841-1918). They had 9 known children who became William's half-siblings:

Mary Jane Overton 1866-
Martha A. Overton 1869-
Rosa L. Overton 1870-1946
David Bell "Doc" Overton 1873-1944
Elmer Enoch Overton 1876-1961
Emmett Moses Overton 1879-1908
Rosa Mae Overton 1882-1974
Minnie Emeline Overton 1884-1944
Sina A. Overton 1886-

In 1877, William married Lucy A. Williams, daughter of Grandison F. Williams and Mary Ann (Evans), residents of Mercer County, Missouri.

William and Lucy had the following known children:

Fannie A. Overton 1878-
Frank Overton 1879-
Oliver Overton 1883-
Nellie Overton 1889-
Wilma Mae (Overton) Gregory 1898-

The Overtons were farmers, living most of their married life in Putnam County, Missouri. In the 1900 census, it shows that Lucy Overton has had 6 children but only 5 were living at that time. Therefore, there is one child missing from the 5 children listed above, and this writer does not know the name of that child.

William's Missouri Death Certificate 28902 shows he died August 5, 1916 and was buried in Brassfield Cemetery. Wife Lucy's death certificate shows she was also buried at Brassfield Cemetery. However, William and Lucy's tombstone is located in Pleasant Home Cemetery, so the death certificates must be in error.

- Information collected by Blytha (Dennis) Ellis. One of my adopted daughters is a descendant of this family through the Overtons' youngest daughter Wilma Mae (Overton) Gregory.
