James Monroe was the son of James Madison and Margaret Ann "Peggy" Nesbitt Chisum. He served in the Confederate States Army, in Walker's Division. After the Civil War was over, he signed the Amnesty Oath on 16 Jul 1866 and was again eligible to vote.
From 1865 to Nov 1881 he resided in Falls or Limestone Counties. It was in Marlin, Falls County, that he married Nancy Josephine Criswell on 13 Feb 1873. They had four children: Leah Ann, Frances Almeda, William Monroe, and Josephine "Jodie" Chisum. Josephine died in 1878 from complications of childbirth, and in Nov 1881 James Monroe moved to Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas, with his daughter Jodie, where he remained for the rest of his life.
His youngest daughter Josephine, or "Jodie," never married but lived with him until he died, caring for him even during the last three years of his life when he was bedridden. They used to have many talks about "the old days" and the family history. I'm sure he had many tales to tell!
