His father, Harris Winstead, built the town's first hotel in 1874. Elm City was originally incorporated in Dec. 1873 as "Toisnot", named after the nearby swamp. So, when Harris married & started his family, there was no town in the area.

The name of the town was changed to Elm City in 1913. But the census of 1900 contradicts that fact. See above.
