Pauline was the 5th of 11 children born to German immigrants Christoph August Conrad Gottlieb Bartels and Engel Marie Karolin "Lena" Bartels. Her father immigrated in 1871 and her mother in 1870. Her father came directly to Saline County, Nebraska but her mother settled initially in Will County, Illinois and them emigrated to Saline County, Nebraska. In 1906 her family relocated to Alpena, South Dakota.
Pauline married Carl W. Scheel on 23 May 1912 at Zion Lutheran Churh in Lane, Jerauld County, South Dakota, and they moved to Beadle County shortly thereafter. They had five children: Orville August, Leland, Elva Lydia, Marvin, and Vernon.
