On the 1850 Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer John A Ruff, 26; June R Ruff, 28; James W Ruff, 5; Andrew W, 4 and Samuel Ruff, 11/12, all Virginia born.

A 17 year old, named Andrew W Ruff, served in Montague's Battalion, Infantry, Rockbridge County Reserves. Verify.

On 26 Jul 1882, A W Ruff, 35, born in Rockbridge Co., VA, the son of John and Rebecca Ruff, married Leilia D Wood, 20, born in Botetourt, the daughter of D M and S E Wood, in Botetourt Co., VA. 1882 Botetourt Co., VA Marriage Register, transcription on Familysearch.

A W Ruff was born in about 1847 (aged 37 years) in Rockbridge County, VA to "Ruff "parents. On "20" Dec 1884, he died in Back Creek, Highland Co., VA. He was a minister and the spouse of Lilia D Ruff. The informant was a friend, Laura Campbell. 1884 Highland Co., Virginia Register of Deaths, line 40, unnumbered page on Familysearch.

Rev. A. W. Ruff, formerly of Lexington, but recently become Pastor of the Presbyterian church on Back creek, Highland county, died there on the "22d" inst. after a brief illness. His remains were conveyed to Lexington for interment. Mr. Ruff left a wife and one child. The child was sick when he died, and Mrs. Ruff was detained among comparative strangers, watching the doubtful issue of its sickness, when tho body of her husband was borne away. Staunton Spectator, Volume 62, Number 16, 31 Dec 1884, The Library of VA.

Andrew ("A.W.) was buried here, as was his only known son, his parents and grandparents. After he died, and his son, his wife remarried to Samuel H Price.

His death certificate says he died on the 20th, his obit on the 22nd and his marker on the 21st. Listed above is the date on the marker, per current Findagrave rules.
