Eldest son of Melville Salter Chaning Pearce and Doris Chaning-Pearce (nee Viney) and dearest Grandson of Elinor Lois and Joseph Chaning-Pearce. Melville and Doris got married on 30/12/1918 at All Saints Church, Malabar Hill, India and at the time Melville was a Captain 1/4th Dorset Regiment and Political Department. Doris was the third daughter of J.E Viney Esq M.D of Swanage. When Paul was born on the 29 July 1921, in Baghdad, India, Melville is noted as a District Magistrate.

Sgt Observer William Carlisle McNally , Flight Sergeant Pilot Donald Wood Beirnes , and Sgt John James Henry Robbins were also killed. Sgt Paul Chaning-Pearce has no known grave, his name is inscribed on the Alamein War Memorial, Egypt.
