Pioneer Banker of City Passes – Lansing Stout Was Financial Leader for 37 Years

Lansing Stout, Portland banker for 37 years, died in his sleep some time during Wednesday night at his home, 2643 Southwest Ravensview drive. While death was unexpected, it had been known that the veteran banker had never fully recovered from an attack of influenza suffered some months ago and had been ailing for some time, but had continued at his desk in First National bank.

Mr. Stout was born in Portland, July 10, 1868, and was 69 years of age. He attended Portland schools and for a number of years served as deputy county clerk. On September 1, 1902 he joined the Hibernia Savings bank when that institution had only three employes, a messenger, a bookkeeper and a cashier, the position he filled.

Some years later he was elected a vice-president, and continued in that post until the bank was merged with First National December 31, 1932, when he became an assistant cashier of the big financial house and held that post at the time of his passing.

He was with the Hibernia a trifle more than 30 years and during that period the bank changed its name from Hibernia Savings to Hibernia Commercial and Savings bank and finally to Hibernia bank.

Last January Mr. Stout was elected secretary of the Portland Clearing House association for his 24th consecutive year.

He was the son of the late Lansing Stout who was the first congressman from Oregon. He was a charter and life member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and of Portland Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Stout is survived by the widow, Antoinette; three children, Lansing Jr., Waldon and Antionette; two sisters, Mrs. James Laidlaw and Mrs. Mary Chenery; a half-brother, Plowden Stott, and a half-sister, Susan Stott Cronan. Funeral arrangements are in charge of Holman & Lutz.
