Fred was the son of Frederick Geibel Sr. (note spelling variation) and Mary Jane Schafer (or Schaeffer), who married on 3 Feb 1881 in Wabash Co., Indiana. About a year earlier, at eight o'clock on the evening of March 31, 1880, Wabash, Indiana became the first electrically lighted city in the world. Exciting times.

Fred and Mary had eight children together—Harry (13 Aug 1881 – aft. 1942), George (Dec 1882 – 12 Aug 1905), Nellie (b.circa 1885), Isabel “Belle” (17 Jul 1887 – Feb 1980), Alma Sarah (20 Dec 1891 – Feb 1985), Frederick Jr. (1 Mar 1894 - 1923), May Alice (18 Oct 1897 – 7 Jul 1986), and Helen Harriet (3 Nov 1900 – 29 Jul 1997).

The family first appeared together on the 1900 Census, living in Noble Township, Wabash Co., Indiana. Fred Geible Sr., aged 41, was earning a living as a butcher. Mary, aged 40, reported that she had had seven children, and that all seven had survived to that census—Harry, aged 18, George, aged 17, Nellie, aged 14, Belle, aged 12, Alma, aged 8, Fred Jr., aged 6, and May, aged 2. Also living with the family were Mary’s parents, Eli Schafer, aged 75, and Sarah Schafer, aged 62.

That 1900 Census was enumerated on June 7-8, 1900, when Mary was four months pregnant with daughter Helen, who joined the family on November 3rd that same year.

The years after that census were a mix of joy and sadness. On 12 Aug 1905, George, Fred and Mary’s second-born child, died at age 22. About a year later, eldest son Harry married Iva Belle Reiff on 1 May 1906 in Wabash County. Three months later, the family lost their breadwinner when Fred Sr. died of tuberculosis on 26 Aug 1906 at age 47, leaving behind a wife and seven children between the ages of five and twenty five.

Mary, widowed, aged 50, appeared without him on the 1910 Census, still living in Wabash County. She reported that she had had eight children, but that only seven were still living, a sad reminder of the loss of son George five years earlier. Still at home with their mother were Belle, aged 22 and working in a factory, Alma, aged 18 and also working in a factory, Fred, aged 16 and working as a tinner doing roofing, May, aged 12, and Helen, aged 10. Daughter Nellie was no longer living with her family. She was living in Los Angeles in 1910, a lodger with 70-year-old widow Anna Zenz, and working as a checker in a dye works, and would marry Charles A. McArthur on 5 Jun 1912.

The nest emptied out quite a bit in the decade following that 1910 Census. Next to marry was daughter Alma who said “I do” to Lorenzo Daniel Speicher on 14 Jun 1916. Two months later, daughter May Alice married Lawrence Albert Putnam on 10 Aug 1916.

On his 5 Jun 1917 WWI registration, Fred, aged 23, was living in Wabash, Indiana and employed as a tinner for Schlemmer Bros. He claimed his mother Mary as a dependent, as she was widowed. He described himself as of medium height and build, with blue eyes and auburn hair.

Fred was next to wed, exchanging vows with Theresa Leonore Burgener on 4 Jun 1919 in Elkhart Co., Indiana. Fred’s sisters Belle and Helen both married the same year. Belle married Homer Gregory Owen on 29 May 1922 and Helen wed S. Orval Alexander on 30 Oct 1922.

When the 1920 Census was taken, Fred Jr., aged 25, and wife Theresa, aged 24, were living in Wabash, Wabash Co., Indiana, where Fred was earning a living as a metal worker in a motor truck factory. Six months after that census enumeration took place, Fred and Leonore (aka Theresa) welcomed son Harry on 19 Jul 1920. He was followed on 10 Jul 1922 by son Merrell D., and daughter Frieda E. in 1924.

Sadly, Fred appears to have died in 1923 before daughter Frieda was born.

Leonore mourned Fred’s loss for three years before she remarried, exchanging vows with Everett Ezra Amber in 1927 in St. Joseph Co., Indiana. I found them on the 1930 Census, living in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Everett, aged 45, was working as a laborer in a brake factory. Leonore, aged 34, was home with her three children—Harry, aged 9, Merrell, aged 7, and Frieda, aged 5, all correctly identified as Everett’s stepchildren.

By the 1940 Census, the family had moved to Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Everett, aged 55, was trying his hand at farming. Leonore, aged 44, was keeping house. Home with her were the three Geible children—Harry, aged 19, Merrell, aged 17, and Frieda, aged 15.

The year after that census, Fred and Leonore’s son Harry married Elizabeth “Betty” Imogene Long on 8 Jun 1941 in Allen Co., Indiana. They would have three daughters together. A few years later, on 17 Jun 1945, Fred and Leonore’s son Merrell married Lois Fulton. They had five children together—David, Norman, Eliza, Katherine and Rebecca. Daughter Frieda also married. According to brother Merrell’s 1998 obituary, her surname was Anderson and she was living in Wakarusa, Indiana. I did find a Frieda E. Anderson in a Donaldson cemetery on Find-A-Grave, memorial # 76156611, but I could not confirm that it was Fred and Leonore’s Frieda.

Leonore’s second husband Everett Amber died in 1950, and Leonore had him buried near first-husband Fred. Leonore lived into her eighties, departing this earth in June of 1977, when she was laid to rest next to Fred, her companion in life of only four years.
