Birth: Apr. 7, 1900

Death: Oct. 27, 1984
Lehigh County

Edna May Romberger (known as "May") was a daughter of Daniel H. Romberger and Minnie (Kepler) Romberger. This made her sister to my grandpa, Gilbert Allen Romberger, and to Amy Irene (Romberger) Strobel.

She was the wife of Arthur F Gackenbach, and mother of Marjorie (nee Gackenbach, then Riddle) Naeyaert.

Born in Williamstown where her father was school director, May and her parents and siblings later moved to Harrisburg, and in 1914, to Allentown where the kids seem to have settled in socially very well. May lived all but the first few years of her adult life in one of the beautiful custom-built "Romberger Homes" (dubbed such by local realtors). Her father Daniel H. Romberger built one for each of his kids, and for himself.

In her young adulthood in Allentown, May and her brother, my grandpa Gil, played doubles tennis as a team, and captured many wins in the city. I once met a very old man at my church's anniversary party, and he actually recalled all three Romberger kids, calling them lively and good at tennis.

May was a lovely, gracious lady. What I recall best about her was her deep, sweet, almost "hooty" alto speaking voice, and her patience with and generosity to me as a child. The family's sweet cat, Cleo, was the first cat with whom I'd ever been acquainted, and Cleo's feline charm awoke the cat lover in me.

Mrs. Edna May Gackenbach, 84, of 2738 Greenleaf St., Allentown, died Saturday in Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center II, Bethlehem. She was the widow of Arthur F. Gachenbach.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Allentown.

Surviving are a daughter Marjorie, wife of Arthur P. Naeyaert of Bethlehem; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
