John Wesley Miller, 79, of Girard, died peacefully at 9:40 A.M., Thursday, September 3, 2009 in the Girard Medical Center in Girard.

He was born September 8, 1929 in South Edna, Kansas, near Welch, Oklahoma, a son of John Walter and Rosa Jane (Baunhofer) Miller.

At the age of 1, his family moved to the Chetopa, Kansas area. He attended Cooke and Pitney Hill rural schools and Chetopa schools. In 7th grade, the family moved north of Angola, Kansas, where he attended Richland School. He graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont, Kansas in 1948 where he lettered in football.

He worked in the aircraft industry in Wichita before entering the US Navy. He served in the Korean Campaign as a boilertender and was honorably discharged in August 1948.

He lived in Benicia, California for 2 years, operating a service station with a Navy buddy before moving to Cherryvale, Kansas. He worked for Continental Can in Coffeyville, Kansas.

He married Clarice Troegle on August 8, 1953 in Parsons, Kansas. She survives of the home.

He and his family moved to Girard, Kansas in 1958. He worked for Hofer Truck Lines for 29 years as a truck owner/operator. The last 12 years he was shop foreman and purchasing agent.

In 1982, he and his wife started Girard Tarps & Covers, now Girard Tarps, Inc., forming a corporation in 1992. They operated the business for 19 1/2 years and then turned the business over to a daughter and son-in-law in July of 2001. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and watching sporting events.

He held a patent on a spring loaded device called "The Snugger" for rollover tarps. In 1995, he was named "Dealer of the Year" by Shur-Lok for being the company with the most sales in the United States and Canada. In 1999, Girard Tarps was named the "Business of the Year" by the Girard Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Girard.

Survivors, in addition to his wife Clarice, of the home, are five children; Donna Woolman of Monkey Island, Oklahoma; Alan Miller and wife Patty, Janet Miller, Lisa Franklin and husband Jerry and Joyce Lord, all of Girard, and a son-in-law, John Carmona of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Grandchildren are Melissa, John, and Andrew Carmona of Colorado Springs; Tyson Mouton of Thayer, Kansas; Jamie and Melissa Eaton, Jarial and Amber Franklin, Heath and Grant Lord, all of Girard, and Natasha Shively of Arma, Kansas. Great-grandchildren are Jessica, Chyann, Alexander, and Johnathon Carmona, Trey Eaton, Brandon Favuzzi, Jessie and Quentin Leon. Sisters are Mary Grace Wagner and Geneva Pearce and husband Leon of Oswego, Kansas and Darlene Hellwig of Chetopa. Numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Valerie Carmona, in November of 2008, his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Revs. Tom Heflin and Ken Sommerfeldt officiating.

Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 P.M., Monday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard where friends may call from 1 until 5 P.M., Sunday and after 10 A.M. Monday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, P.O. Box 258, Girard, 66743.
