Mary Jewell Young, 96, of Abilene, TX formerly of Hooker died Sunday, March 26, 2000 at Spring Season Nursing Home in Abilene.

Born June 3, 1903 in Checotha, she was the daughter of William Edward and Jessie Mae Durham Acker and moved with her family, by covered wagon, to Hooker.

On Aug. 26, 1922 in Liberal, KS Mary was united in marriage to James Hirom Young. She worked for many families in the Hooker area. On Sept. 21, 1959, James died but she continued to make Hooker her home until 1996 when she moved to Abilene, TX to be near her daughter.

A member of the Hooker Church of Christ, she was baptized on Oct. 4, 1959 by Clifton Stark and was a hard worker and a faithful Christian. She loved to quilt and crochet.

Those preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, James' son, Eugene; daughter, Wilma Bates; and grandson, Samual Page.

Survivors include her son, Ray and Lee Young of Edmond; daughters, Jewell and Jim Halford of Abilene, TX and Roberta and Billy Page of Burleson, TX; her half brother, Lloyd Acker of Liberal, KS and half sister, Rosie Raff of Hooker; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 29 at the Hooker Church of Christ with Nevelle Buchanan, John Maynard and Evan Eggleston officiating.
