Gilbert Rosel was born shortly after his parents had started their trek west. His mother was only 15 years old when he was born. Her husband had been away on an assignment and didn't return until the baby was six weeks old.

His parents remained at Winter Quarters for another three years before leaving for the Valley. Upon their arrival in the valley, Brigham Young sent them to Ogden to settle.

Gilbert learned to shoot at an early age because of problems with the Indians.

After his marriage, he and Sarah went to live in Hooper, Utah.

He helped with the railroad, was a constable, was sent to help colonize Arizona, and, upon his return, was called on a mission in 1884 . At the return from his mission, he was persuaded to accept the position of sheriff of Weber County, whereupon he moved his family to Ogden. Upon his release he entered into the grocery business. Later the building burned to the ground and he returned to farming.

He was trusted and well liked by everyone and remained active in the church.

He died at the age of 81.
