He was later adopted by Maruice G. Hanes
John enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17 & served 3 years primary post in Badpost, Germany where he developed a passion for cooking, a skill he used to support his family in the years to come.
John spent many years also working in construction with roofing companies throughout Kansas. He taught his cooking and construction skills to his 5 children who still utilize them today.
John found God later in life with the help of his family and friends within the Eden Mennonite Church. He came to know Christ and believed in the saving love of Jesus.
John had many hobbies including fishing, reading, gardening and baking. He often experimented in the kitchen to create his own delicious recipes. He was a very friendly and outgoing person who was always willing to stop and talk to a familiar face. It was joked that he never met a stranger.
He loved to be outside and could often be seen sitting in the yard where he was just a wave away from anyone passing.
Those who knew John, knew he was strong in spitit and will. He always did things his own way and in his own time. His will and spirit helped him in his 18 year battle with cancer and encouraged others to do the same.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Kathleen S, sons J. Shane, Maurice C., Henry and daughters Tina and Deni brothers Steven and Joseph sister Gwendolyn Overmeyer, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren
