Lawrence Merle Dittmer was born the eldest son of John and Fern Dittmer on August 15, 1921, near Minden, Iowa. He attended Country School Silver Dell #6 for eight years and then graduated from Shelby High School in 1939.
Lawrence was engaged in farming before going into the military. He enlisted in the 542 Army Airborne stationed at Fort Benning and Fort Bragg. Sergeant Dittmer earned said rank and Jump Master after twenty-seven jumps during his paratrooper training.
Upon returning after the war, he rented a farm southeast of Minden. In February of 1948, he married Immanuel Nurse, Alice Jean Bittle from Harlan, Iowa. This loving union continued for nearly fifty-eight years.
In 1959, they purchased a farm west of Shelby where they lived until finally moving into town in 1993. He continued his devotion of tending and planting trees and spring crops until recently.
Lawrence enjoyed collecting and restoring old gas engines, spending time with family/friends, and having a passion for good food; especially chocolate.
Organizations in which he actively participated are as follows: Shelby United Methodist Church, West Pott. Soil Conservation Commissioner, Shelby School Board, Farm Bureau Harrison Co., Carstens' Farm and Shelby Kiwanis.
Preceded in death were parents and his wife, Jean.
He leaves to mourn son, David and his wife, Leora, of Minden; daughter, Joan and her husband, Myron, of Sioux City, Iowa; son, Tim and his wife, Tracy, of Neosho, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brothers, Gayle and wife, Juanita, of Bella Vista, Ark., and Willard of Shelby, Iowa; nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
Funeral service was Saturday, May 13, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at Shelby Methodist Church. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or Carstens' Memorial Farmstead, both of Shelby.
Knutson Family Chapel in Avoca, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
