He was discharged on Nov 12, 1862 to accept a commission as 2nd Lt. in Co. D. 2nd Illinois Light Artillery but he declined the commission.
On Aril 29, 1901 Walter received an Army Invalid Pension.
When Walter died on May 5, 1917 his death certificate stated he was 77 years old, born in Shawneetown, IL. on Feb 28, 1840. He was widowed residing at 360 E. Garfield Blvd., Chicago, IL. and he was in the sewing machine business. He was buried at Oakwoods Cemetery on May 7, 1917.
