Marge was born as Sadie Karns, the second daughter of William Arthur Karns and Susanna Caroline Elizabeth Teal. She was a native Californian. He father was a professional baseball player who played for a short time with the Baltimore Orioles and then in the Pacific Coast League. Following the untimely death of her mother in 1917, she was sent back East to her mother's family. She recalled that the train she was on was robbed by banditos near El Paso and that it had to be uncoupled and placed on barges to cross the Mississippi River. She attended the Samuel Ready School in Baltimore. She moved to New York where she worked as a secretary before her marriage to Dave Malone. They had three children: David A. Jr., Donald Karns, and Vivian Kay Malone. She lived most of her life in Brooklyn, New York, but moved to the warmth of Florida in retirement. She was a good cook and a skilled baker, known for her cupcakes.
