PORTLAND — Longtime Chinook resident, Esther Miethe, died on March 11, 2015, at the age of 88. She was born on April 25, 1926, in Hammond, Ind., to Jordan and Marie Diehl. She was the youngest of five children.
In 1945 Esther married her handsome Marine and the love of her life, Des Miethe. Together they raised four children and were married 50 years until Des’ death in 1996.
In 1959 they moved to Chinook to work at the Chinook Packing Company. Esther was a remarkable person. She was a wonderful mother, a devoted wife, and a hard and diligent office worker at Chinook Packing Company for 20 years. She organized the Cub Scout Troop and worked with Des organizing and managing youth baseball teams and events in Chinook. Together she and Des built three houses there.
After they retired, they built a house on the golf course at Surfside where Esther played golf and was the Women’s Division President. She was very artistic, a beautiful oil painter, tole painter and loved working with ceramics.
Esther unfortunately lost her sight by the age of 60. Despite her blindness, she continued her active life for the next 20 years. She was kind, loving and spiritual with a gentle voice you longed to hear. She cared about people and people young and old were drawn to her and her unique ability to make people feel important, cared about, and loved.
Esther is survived by her four children, Linda Miethe of Portland, Karen (Ken) Leu of Seattle, Lance Miethe of Port Protection, Alaska, and Terry (Nancy) Miethe Henderson, Nev.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be given to Friends of Chinook School.
