RAPID CITY - Herbert William Evans "Herb" was the co-pilot of a C-46 transport plane which crashed in the mountains of Tibet on March 24, 1944. He was declared missing in action and later declared dead. The wreckage of his plane was found in 2001, and a US Army recovery team from Hawaii went to the crash site and retrieved the remains of Herb and his three fellow crew members in 2002. Identification of some of the remains was accomplished by dental records and mitochondrial DNA. Only two of the crew members could be positively identified, one of which was Lt. Evans. A group burial for the entire crew was held in Arlington National Cemetery on May 9, 2006. Herb's remains were brought to Rapid City for burial with his parents in Mountain View Cemetery. Graveside services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2006, with Chaplain Lynn Wilson of the Army National Guard officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Army National Guard. Lt. Evans was born in Aberdeen, SD, December 27, 1917, the son of the late C.A. and Helen Mae Evans. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1935. He was a writer and editor of the school newspaper, "The School Quill." He attended the University of SD in Vermillion, where he was editor of the school paper, "The Volante," and was the broadcaster for school football and basketball games. He graduated from the University in 1939. He was a licensed pilot and enlisted in the Army Air Corps after his graduation. He was assigned to the 1st Transport Group, Indo China Wing, where he flew 35 missions over "The Hump" (the Himalayas) before the crash. At the time of his death he was survived by his parents, a brother and sister. His brother was the late Wes Evans, former football coach at Rapid City High School. His sister was the late Raevenna Goodwin. His sister-in-law Louise Evans is still living at age 96 in North Augusta, SC, near her son, Gary Evans, who was a graduate of Rapid City High School and the School of Mines.
