Irene is my paternal grandmother.

Irene Delores Rawn was born November 2, 1897 in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. She was the daughter of Arthur Adolphus Rawn and Jessie Van Heukelem. She was one of eight children of which five grew to adulthood. Irene and her family suffered a devastating loss when she was but 10 years of age. Her mother Jessie died at age 38 from Tuberculosis. This loss was felt by Irene her entire lifetime. Her father did remarry the year after mothers death; however, having a step mother never really filled the void left by her mothers death.

Grandma always had a great sense of humor. She liked a good joke (or occasionally even a bad one! :-) )
She held different jobs before her marriage, but the one listed on the 1920 census was a factory worker for the Keeler Brass Company. Her son would eventually work for this company as did her brother, Abel.

Irene married Bert Londo, Sr on March 2, 1920 in Muskegon, Michigan. Her father and step-mother lived in Muskegon. Bert and Irene were parents to twelve children; Bert Jacob, Delores Irene, Jeanne Laraine, Lois Grace, Shirley Mae, Bert Londo, Gilbert Jack, Delores, Jay Junior, Geraldine, Glenda Jean, and Bert Londo, Jr. Of those twelve only seven lived to adulthood. The first three babies passed away at very early ages-none of them lived past 2 months of age. The Londo's spent many years of their children's lives living at 320 Grant St. S.W. in Grand Rapids. She lost her husband after 43 years of marriage on December 17, 1963. Grandma was strong though and lived another 30 years after losing her husband. Her family meant the world to her.

Grandma was a very giving lady. If one were to comment to her that they liked something she had, she would try to give it to them. She had a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off of her back. Her children as well as her grandchildren, nieces and nephews all remember her very fondly. She enjoyed mysteries and she enjoyed playing bingo and if an emergency vehicle were to pass by the house, I would bet money that she would beat you to the door to see what was going on.

Grandma passed away at St. Mary's Living Center on March 15, 1993. She was 95 years old. I still can't believe that as of this writing, she has been gone for thirteen years. I truly miss the stories that Grandma would tell when we would visit. I'm here to tell the world that even 95 years isn't "enough".

Here is a copy of her obituary. This was in the Grand Rapids Press Tuesday, March 16th, 1993
