Richard Wallace Moncure, 93, died peacefully on May 10, 2012 at his home.
He was born Oct 10, 1918 in Stafford County, Va. The youngest of seven children of William Augustus Moncure and Caroline Pemberton Moncure, Dick was predeceased by his brothers Tom, Bill and Sam and his sisters Mary, Margaret and Caroline.
He grew up in Alexandria, Va., attended Episcopal High School and graduated from Virginia Military Institute as a member of the class of 1940. His early years were marked by extended trips to China with his mother to visit his sister and her husband, Francis Cox who was the Chancellor of St. John's University in Suchow.
After graduating from VMI, he entered the Navy and spent time in the Mediterranean and Pacific during World War II. Upon his return from the war, he joined Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, subsequently a subsidiary of LTV, and was employed there until his retirement in 1985. In 1950, he married Jellis Kirkpatrick from Lynchburg, Va., and they were very happily married until her death in 1993. They moved to Lookout Mountain in 1955 and their daughter Mary was born the following year.
Through the years, Dick enjoyed his involvement at the Church of the Good Shepherd, both on the Vestry and in numerous other capacities, Fairyland Club, The Children's Home and the Houston Museum. He maintained an interest in architecture, antiques and gardening throughout his life and cherished his time spent walking around the neighborhood with his dogs and the neighborhood dogs who vied for both his attention as well as the dog biscuits in his pocket.
In addition to his daughter Mary, Dick is survived by his son-in-law, Tom Watson and their children, Chris Watson, Kelly Watson Cunliffe and Morgan Moncure Watson who all live in Atlanta. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks are given to his wonderful caregivers and friends, Nina and Benny Freeman, Elizabeth Guffey, James Lipham and Lana, Truman and Tim Sharp as well as those from Hutcheson Hospice who have constantly been by his side.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Lookout Mountain Beautification Fund, P.O. Box 22, Lookout Mountain, Tn. 37350, or Hutcheson Hospice, 100 Mitchell Rd., Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. 30742.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain,TN with a visitation at the church from 10-11 a.m.
