William was the first child of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Baker) Pelton. He came with his parents from Saybrook to Sangerfield, Oneida, NY about 1798. He learned the trade of blacksmith from his father.
William married Lucy Webster daughter of Stephen and Sarah (Wheeler) Webster on 23 May 1815. They had four children: Charles, Francis, William and Harriet.
William had his blacksmith shop in Waterville not far from where Lucy is buried. Family records indicate William froze to death. He is probably buried in Waterville Cemetery but there is no gravestone.
