David was the son of David,Sr. and Bertha Dean Shirley. In school he was affectionately called "Mad Dog" (a name given to him by one of his teachers) because of the way he played football. "He goes just like a mad dog!"

He was preceded in death by his father:David,Sr. and a sister:Annie Lee.
He is survived by his mother; brothers: Audie,Charles and Robert and sisters: Brenda, Bernice, and Martha. Also some half brothers and sisters, and many other relatives and friends.

"Little David" was killed by the smoke and fumes from the styrofoam ceiling of his house when it caught fire. He was found near the back door, but he was not burned.
