George Lee Lutz and his family, purchased a Dutch Colonial, in Amityville, Long Island, N.Y. A year earlier before their move, six members of the DeFeo family had been fatally shot in the home. Ronald DeFeo Jr., the eldest son, was convicted of the murders.
The 28 days they lived in the home was the basis behind the Jay Anson book "The Amityville Horror". This was just the beginning of what became one of the most famous haunted house stories. The book evolved into several movies.
The story the Lutzes claimed to be true is still hotly debated.
