Brother of the Hon. Abraham Smith and Allen Blair Smith, and the son of Abraham Smith (1763-1813) and Mary (Knapp) Smith.
Grandson of Abraham Smith (1708-1764) and Mary Smith, Daniel Knapp and Mary (Field) Knapp.

Saxton Smith was born at the house built by his grandfather about 1730 near the intersection of Wood Street and Secor Road, Putnam Valley, New York. It was in that part of Philipstown then in Dutchess County, which was separated in 1839 as the Town of Quincy, and was renamed Putnam Valley in 1840, now in Putnam County.

"He held many public offices, among them commissioner of deeds, superintendent of public schools, supervisor of Putnam Valley, member of Assembly, Putnam County, and State Senator." (Genealogy of the Hill, Dean, Pinckney, Austin, Barker, Anderson, Rhoades and Finch Families (Newburgh, NY: 1907) by Franklin Couch.)

Saxton Smith was Supervisor of the Town of Putnam Valley in 1841-42, 1850-51, 1858, 1860, 1862-63, and 1867-76.

He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Putnam Co.) in 1838, 1840 and 1844.

He was a member of the New York State Senate 1846-49, sitting in the 69th, 70th (both 2nd D.), 71st and 72nd New York State Legislatures (both 7th D.).

He was again a member of the State Assembly in 1863, and a member of the State Senate (8th D.) in 1864 and 1865.

Saxton Smith never married. He was a member of the Masonic order.

He was a friend and neighbor, and possibly relative, of Capt. Peter Angevine whose son Allen S. Angevine bought the property of Allen Blair Secor adjoining the Smith property and was the father of Saxton Smith Angevine.

In 1831, Peter Angevine moved to Royalton, Niagra County, New York. On April 18, 1836, Saxton Smith was there when he witnessed a deed for Peter Angevine (Niagra County, N.C. Deed Book 17, p.283).
