Between 1791 and 1797, Amasa removed with his father Samuel Scovill and brothers, from Haddam, Connecticut, to Durham, New York, where they settled on land that was part of a thousand acre tract in the third Van Bergen Patent of 35,000 acres, that had been surveyed for Martin Garretson Van Bergen and others in June of 1767. The land selected by Samuel was about three miles from West Durham; a half-mile east of Manorkill, and was on the western slope of Steenburg Mountain that descends 200 feet into the valley. The farm Samuel gave to Amasa was at the eastern end and head of the valley. By father Samuel's will in 1808, Amasa was given the land they were living on then. Amasa built at first a small log house and later a frame house, which was still in good condition, in 1915, and was occupied by Amasa's granddaughter, Mrs. Pearsall.

Amasa Scovill married Rhoda Marsh, ca. 1802, in Durham, Greene Co., New York. Regarding Rhoda's father - Elijah Marsh, the following comes from Marsh Genealogy.
