Scott Township's Last Civil War Veteran Answers Final Call

With military honors accorded by a score of World War I soldiers, funeral services for John Berlien, last surviving Civil War veteran of Scott township, were held in the South Scott church Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted by Elder M. O. Johnson, a neighbor. A large circle of neighbors and friends attended the service and afterward six Spanish-American War soldiers, H. Lyell Shank, Edward D. Willis, Ernest D. Kemery, Dr. Carl Ingalls, William L. Jarrard and Joe Brokaw, as pallbearers escorted the flag covered casket to the burial spot.

Mr. Berlien, usually vigorous, had been in failing health during the winter, but was about the premises on Wednesday forenoon, and was seated on the davenport with his daughter, Mrs. Frank Cole, when he suffered a sinking spell. Mrs. Cole assisted him to lie down, and he quietly passed away within a few minutes.

Mr. Berlien was a private in Co.H 129th Indiana regiment of volunteer infantry. Since the war he has lived in Steuben county. His wife died about four years ago. He is survived by five children, Fred, Perry, Mrs. Frank Cole, Mrs. Waldo Hanna and Mrs. George Souders, all of Steuben County.

His Life

John Berlien, son of Samuel and Carolyn Kissinger Berlien, was born in Stark county, Ohio, Sept. 28, 1849, and fell asleep at his home in Scott township, Feb. 26, 1936, at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 28 days. When a small boy his parents moved here from Stark county, Ohio, where the remainder of his life was spent in Scott township. When the dark days of the Civil War came and the cause of freedom needed the service of many brave men he heeded the call to arms and enlisted in Co. H, 129th regiment of Indiana volunteers. He was honorably discharged from service, Aug. 29, 1865, at Charlotte North Carolina, and later became a member of the G.A.R. and the B. J. Crosswait Post.

On May 9, 1869, he was united in marriage to Mary Hart and to this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters; Lyman, who departed this life June 4, 1932, Mrs. Edith Cole, who has resided in the home since the mother's death, Perry, Fred and Mrs. Waldo Hanna and Mrs. Geo. Souders all of Scott township. He also leaves to mourn his departure one brother, Aaron, of Scott township, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One sister, Kate Day, preceded him in death; also a half-brother Jake, of Alabama. John was well liked in the community in which he lived so many years everyone speaking of him as being a good man, industrious, socialable, neighborly and a devoted friend to all. In every way he was an admirable citizen who will be much missed and when the books of God are opened may the good deeds recorded bring him an eternal reward.
