Dale Brehe of Agar, South Dakota, passed away at home in his log cabin, the evening of Nov. 17, with his family, after a 8 1/2 week battle with glioblastoma brain cancer at the age of 62.
The service was held Nov. 24 at 2 PM at the Agar Community Hall, in Agar, SD, officiate will be Pastor Luke Edwards of Onida. The Prayer Service will be held at the Agar Hall on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 4 PM. Dale will be cremated and spread near his beloved place in Sully County.
Dale was born to Albert and Ella (Olson) Brehe on August 22, 1952 in Hoven, SD. He joined his 3 older sisters, Bobbie, Connie, and Bonnie. He went to Cass country school and Agar High School. Before finishing high school Dale headed out to spread his wings, working in Colorado, then coming back to South Dakota to work south of Holabird for Breezy Peterson, and there meeting his life time friends, Jim & Etta Kerr and Skeet & Fran Smith. Coming back to the Agar area, and working with Vet Doug Hageman.
He met his wife, Jane Schmitgen as a youth group leader for St. John’s and Holy Cross youth. He went to shoeing school the year, they were married, May 29, 1976 for 38 years. Dale and Jane became a team plunging ahead into uncharted waters, as an adventurer, an entrepreneur.
Dale took Jane too many roping with his buckskin horse Buster. Dale loved animals. They started their love of driving horses in 1977; living on the old Alex Brehe farm they would drive Buddy, on a pony cart using their hand as the breeching, and caring a bucket of milk over to Albert and Ella’s place across the pasture. Albert taught them how to hook up the horses and drive, so they started with all the saddle horses. To Buster’s dismay he became a team with Appy. Then in 1977, they bought their first team of Bill and Bob, which started a love of raising and driving draft horses. They had their first child, Micky Lee on Jan. 2, 1979, closely followed by Jenny Marie on Sept. 12, 1980. 1989 Dale and Jane, along with their children Micky and Jenny, went on a 3 month Centennial Wagon train, the best summer they ever had. This started a life time of parades, wagon trains, and so many, many, friends, they called their wagon train family. He ended with the 125th Wagon Train this past September, that we had planned to be on since the Centennial wagon train. 4H and animals with his kids was his joy. He raised Simmental cattle, Gelbvieh, Holsteins, Angus, and later getting into the Akaushi crosses. Their place was known as the petting zoo by many children in the area. As the Brehe’s always had cats, dogs, geese, chickens, pheasants, baby calves, a yak bull, buffalo, a few black buck antelope, barbado sheep, sheep, rabbits, goats (milk and the curly angoras), lamas, a potbellied pig, called Petunia, later worms, emus and ostriches. Dale loved taking his grandkids and many other kids, young and old along on hay rides or wagon trains, and the annual Nite Before Xmas Hayride in Onida.
Dale actively professed his faith being involved in his church, Youth group leader, St. John’s as a voter, Sunday school superintendent, and President, later joining the Holy Cross, voters. He attended numerous meetings as a delegate for the church district and national, attending lots with Pastor Urbach. He was AAL and Thrivent president for years. He served on the Farm Bureau Young Farmer Ranch board, Sully County Farm Bureau member and president. He became actively involved in his children’s interests, at school and in the community. Dale was a 4H leader for 27 years and Council President. Dale and Jane started the 4H Archery program in 1992 and touched the lives of many kids, and had lots of fun. He served on the Agar Fire Department. Jane & Dale received a conservation award and the Rural School Award for support of the Agar school and community. He was also member of an Audubon society and Rabbit club in Pierre. Lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, and NRA. Dale was always ready to lend a helping hand, whenever and wherever needed. This was who Dale was! He greeted you with a big smile and a friendly handshake, and called you a friend. He always believes there is a reason for everything that happens, we may not know, but there is a reason.
His survivors includes his precious wife, Jane, his two wonderful children, Micky Lee of Agar, Jenny (Rev. David) Brinkmeyer of Pleasant Dale, NB, 4 fun grandchildren, Abigail, 8; Joshua, 6; Micah, 4; and Chloe, 2. 3 sisters, Bonnie Smith, Connie (Eric) Hedeen, and Bobbie (Lee) Bierman. Lots of Nieces and Nephews, Great Niece’s and Nephew’s, great-great nieces and nephews. Numerous relatives and Many, Many Friends, he called Family.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Albert and Ella Brehe, Nephew Kelly Smith, Brother-in-law Elmer Smith, and 1 great nephew, Sam Bierman.
We want to thank Avera Home Hospice especially Patty Muser for all her support. The memorial will be used for Blue paraments for Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Onida, and target butts for the Sully 4H Archery Program.
