Elmer L. Cook died February 6 2015, at The Hampshire. He was born April 4, 1918, near Putnam, Oklahoma, the son of George Washington Cook and Hazel Thrush. He is the last surviving member of the George Cook family. He had eleven siblings. Sisters: Cora Moeta Cobb, Mabel Lorene Livingood, Mazie Gertrude Holsapple, Easter Oneta, Verley Pauline Lundigan Caine, Charlene Bertina Burton Johnson; Half Sisters: Blanche Leava Black, Georgia Rae Bell, Althea Berthy Jewel; Brothers: Wilson George Cook, and Clarence L. Cook.

Dorothy Wilson, Elmer's wife of 73 years, died March 17, 2011.

He is survived by his four children, Willa Hirschaut, Betty Jo Swenson, Lou Ann Young and Robert Cook. Elmer has nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

Elmer has resided in the Merced-Atwater area since retiring from the Air Force in 1970. His 20-year career in the Air Force followed a tour in the Marine Corps during World War II. Elmer substituted in the Merced Public Schools and taught at Merced College until retiring again in 1985.

Devoted to his family, Elmer was a member of First Christian Church, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 99, Scottish Rite, Fresno Shriners, and Eastern Star. Elmer helped organize two camper travel clubs, the Yosemite Sams and the California Drifters, and spent many weekends camping around California.

Memorial services will be at 11 AM on Sat. February 14, 2015 also at Wilson Chapel in Merced. Interment will be Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at 10:30 AM at San Joaquin National Cemetery at Gustine.
