Cynthia Cecilia Guanzon Canto Kawile
February 1, 1955 - February 27, 2010

LEAGUE CITY — After a courageous 7-year battle with chronic renal failure, Cynthia died peacefully in her sleep and returned to her Creator on February 27, 2010, at her home in League City. She was 55 years old.

Cynthia was born on February 1, 1955, in Quezon City, the Philippines, to Dr Archimedes R. Canto and the late Leonila C. Guanzon. She grew up in the heart of Manila, attending Espiritu Santo Parochial School and graduating from St. Bridget’s High School. She then went on to study Nursing at the University of Santo Tomas, which was interrupted by her immigration to the United States in 1975.

She earned her nursing degree from Misericordia School of Nursing in New York then worked at the Sprain Brook Nursing Manor in Yonkers where she met her future husband, Salvador “Bernie” Kawile. They were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on July 26, 1980. They then moved to Texas City where she worked as a Pediatric nurse at the Mainland Medical Center from 1979 to 1983. They moved to their current home in League City and she worked at Pasadena Bayshore Medical Center from 1983 until she retired in 2003. Her beloved daughter, Gabrielle Grace “GiGi”, was born in 1983. Cynthia was a devout parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in League City.

Cynthia loved listening to music. She had a wonderful singing voice, often accompanying herself on the acoustic guitar. She was genuinely kind and always gave of herself, even to her physical detriment. She lived vicariously in her daughter’s athletic achievements, enjoying every moment watching Gigi as she played volleyball, ran track, wrestled, basketball, tennis or even marching band.

She logged many miles going from tournaments and camps. She made hemodialysis a lifestyle rather than a burden, constantly planning her schedule around it. She loved playing slot machines, many times commenting that her medical problems would vanish whenever she was busy playing. She had a wonderful sense of humor. She laughed, she loved and she lived.

She will forever be remembered by her loving husband Bernie; and her devoted daughter Gigi; by her proud father Archie; and her faithful brothers Ramon and Noel. Her loving memory will stay with her cousins, with her many nephews and nieces, with her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, with her aunts and uncles, and with other family and countless friends who were blessed to have known her.

A visitation will be held at Crowder Funeral Home in Dickinson on Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Vigil beginning at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary at 7:30. Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Texas City on Friday, March 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster.

Please join Cynthia’s family in celebrating her life.
