Stephen was the son of Robert Spillsby Coleman and his first wife Elizabeth Caroline Wray. Go to his father's memorial for information about his parents and the family's migrations.

Stephen's father was a school teacher, so there is no doubt that he was well educated before reaching adulthood. By 1860, Stephen was a rural mail carrier for the town of Revilee in Scott County, Arkansas. More than likely, it was on his mail route to the Short Mountain community that he met and fell in love with Zelpha "Anna" Deen. Anna was a daughter of David H. Deen and his unknown wife.

The couple were married by John J. Gibson, Justice of the Peace, on Oct. 10, 1861 in Franklin County, Arkansas. Of this union the following children are known, all born in Short Mountain, Six Mile Valley, Franklin County, Arkansas.
--John Wesley Coleman, born in Aug. 1862
--Eliza, born about 1868
--Nancy, born May 1870
--Harvey Tilman, born Mar. 18, 1873
--Robert David, born Aug. 11, 1875
--Meredith Redmond, born Apr. 2, 1878

Stephen was by no mean an idle man, caring for his family and community. He also devoted himself to studies and became an Elder of the Christian Church. He was ordained by Elder John B. Dalton, Evangilist, at Stoney Point, Logan County on the second Sunday in Mar. 1878. After his ordination, Stephen ministered the Gospel and performed marriage ceremonies.

Before 1893, the families of Stephen Coleman and several of his Deen in-laws removed from Logan County, Arkansas to Texas where they scattered to Hunt, Milam and other counties. The last record found naming Anna is dated September 1905. She was then living in Hunt County.

I would very much like to communicate with Stephen's descendents.

Biography by Connie Blackwell, third great granddaughter of Robert Spillsby Coleman and his second wife, Mary Hutchison Grogan.
