The following passages are excerpted from "The Flautt Family in America" by Mrs. Frank Stough Schwartz and Harry D. Bowman, M.D., and made available here through the courtesy of FindaGrave contributor Mike Hahn.

A deed found in the Court House of Adams County, Pennsylvania, proves the close ties of the early Flautts with the Catholic Church on the frontier of the New World. Quoting from that deed, "This indenture, made the fifth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand, seven hundred and ninety one, between Joseph Flauth and Mary, his wife, of Germany Township in the County of York and State of Pennsylvania of the one part and Patrick McSherry, Mathias Baker, and Henry O'Hara, trustees of the Roman Catholic Congregation of Littlestown of the other part; whereas the honorable, the proprietors of the late province, now State of Pennsylvania, by their letters patent bearing date the 16th day of September which was in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty, did grant and confirm unto a certain Peter Little, his heirs and assigns, a certain tract of land in Germany Township and County of York, containing three hundred and eleven acres and allowance as in and by the said patent recorded in the rolls office for the City and County of Philadelphia will fully appear; and whereas, the said Peter Little and Urzula, his wife, for the consideration mentioned in their deed under hands and seals, did bargain, grant, sell, and convey unto the said Joseph Flauth, his heirs and assigns, a certain part of the tract of land aforesaid and adjoining the lots of Petersburg widow, Feiser and John Knauff, containing one hundred and eighty four acres and allowance Now this indenture witnesseth that the said Joseph Flauth and Mary, his wife, for the consideration sum of one hundred and ninety pounds in gold or silver money of Pennsylvania, to him the said Joseph Flauth in hand paid before the ensealing thereof by the trustees aforesaid, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, hath granted, bargained, sold, released, enfeoffed, confirmed, and by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, release, enfeoff, and confirm unto the said Patrick McSherry, Mathias Baker, and Henry O'Hara, trustees for the Congregation aforesaid, a certain house and lot of ground in Germany Township and County of York, lying on the westward of the road leading from Petersburg to Baltimore and bounded as followeth; beginning at the town alley adjoining Joseph Stealy lot and running southward with the great road aforesaid, seven perches and a half, thence northward seven perches and a half, then westward by other land of Joseph Flauth sixteen perches, thence northward seven perches and a half to the alley aforesaid, thence with the alley eastward sixteen perches to the place of beginning, containing three quarters of an acre of ground, together with the house and stable and other improvements and appurtenances to the only use, benefit, behoof of the Roman Catholic Congregation of Littlestown forever and for no other use, intent, or purpose whatever, to be converted unto a Roman Catholic Church or Chapel and Burying ground for the congregation aforesaid, to be known and distinguished by the name of the Roman Catholic Church or Chapel of Littlestown and to remain for that use and purpose forever unless otherwise agreed upon by two thirds of the members of the congregation aforesaid." (Adams Co., Pa., Liber N-Folio 81).

The History of St. Aloysius Church (of Littlestown) written by William McSherry in 1893, gives an account of the above transaction. Excerpts from McSherry's book follow: "As early as 1784, Mass was said in the house of Joseph Flautt near Littlestown by the good Jesuits of Conowago" (Page 12) "As early as 1784, a small building had been obtained for a church. If this is true, it was only a temporary measure, because on February 5, 1791, the trustees of the Roman Catholic Congregation of Littlestown then called Petersburg, purchased property on which stood a hotel. This building was promptly remodeled and dedicated to Almighty God as a Catholic Church under the patronage of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, patron of youth."

"The deed from Joseph Flautt and Mary, his wife, of Germany Township is dated February 5, 1791, by which, in consideration of the sum of 190 pounds in gold or silver, they conveyed a certain house and lot of ground in Germany Township, County of York, lying on the westward of the road leading from Petersburg to Baltimore." (Page 14)

Two important items emerge from a perusal of this deed. First, the home of Joseph Flauth is described as near Littlestown on the "other land" belonging to Flauth. This evidently was the second farm, bought from the heirs of McCreery, near Littlestown, and named Mt . Pleasant. This land touched the lot deeded to the Catholic Church, giving Flautt an acreage of 359 acres in what now certainly must be the land on which the western end of Littlestown was later built.
