Dr. James Keith “Jim” Smith, 70, passed on January 19, 2015 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center following a short illness. He was born in Philadelphia, MS on September 12, 1944 to Mr. and Mrs. William Gipson (Bertie Alice Apperson) Smith.

Raised in Jackson, MS, Dr. Smith graduated from Provine High School (1962). He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from Millsaps College (1966) and a Masters of Science in Geology (Paleontology) from University of Alabama in 1969.

Dr. Smith married his beloved wife, Mary Lois Adkins Smith on December 23, 1967 at Crossroads Baptist Church in Union, MS. They have four children.

Dr. Smith worked in the Mississippi and Louisiana petroleum industries until his ordination into the gospel ministry at Pinelake Baptist Church Brandon, MS. He received his Masters of Divinity from New Orleans Theological Seminary in 1986, where he served as Education Director of First Presbyterian Church of New Orleans and a Doctor of Ministry in 1994. Dr. Smith served as Minister of Education at First Baptist Church of Gautier in Gautier, MS, and later as Pastor at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Toomsuba, MS; Beacon Street Baptist Church, Philadelphia, MS; Desoto Baptist Church, Shubuta, MS; and Goodwater Baptist Church, Enterprise, MS. Upon retiring from the professional ministry, Dr. Smith and his wife became members of Midway Baptist Church, Meridian, MS.

Lifelong collector of minerals and seashells, Dr. Smith was active in the Mississippi Gem and Mineral Society. An avid gardener, he began growing and hybridizing daylillies at his El Adamah Farm in recent years. He was active in the Meridian and Hattiesburg Hemorocalis Societies. Dr. Smith frequently worked to share his vast knowledge with others by teaching classes at Millsaps College while still working in the oil industry, seminary classes through an NOBTS extension, and through Ebeneezer Ministries until his death. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Smith taught advanced science classes at Southeast Lauderdale High School.

Dr. Smith's greatest love was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He and his wife were active in church service throughout their marriage. He mentored many individuals over the years from an RA group at Alta Woods Baptist Church in Jackson, MS to numerous ordainees at the churches where he pastored. He especially loved caring for the youth of the church.

Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mary Lois Adkins Smith of Meridian, MS; his mother, Bertie Alice Apperson Smith of Union, MS; and his brother, William Gipson “Billy” Smith of Union, MS.
