Funeral services for long-time Fond du Lac legislator Earl F. McEssy, 76, of 361 Forest Ave., will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and at 1 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. The Rev. Jan Kieliszewski and the Rev. John O'Brien will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery where graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion. .
Friends may call Tuesday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Mr.McEssy died Saturday, Oct. 14,1989 at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born Feb. 12, 1913, in Fond du Lac, a son of William and Annie O'Connor McEssy. On Dec. 25, 1942, he married Charlotte M. Hamilton at St. Joseph's Church.
He was a graduate of Fond du Lac High School and Marquette University and received an honorary doctorate of law degree from Marian College. He was a veteran If World War ll serving in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant from 1942 to 1946. He was awarded three citations and seven battle stars.
Mr. McEssy was a former real estate broker, purchasing agent for Kiekhaefer Mercury, a Fond du Lac County traffic officer and a county undersheriff.
For 32 years he served in the Wisconsin State Legislature, representing the 52nd Assembly district from 1956 to 1989. His legislative committee assignments included: Excise and Fees, Highway Safety Council, Highways, Legislative Council, Elderly Abuse, Commission on Courts, State Transportation, Governor's Committee on Law Enforcement, Municipalities, Elections, State Affairs, Taxation, State of Wisconsin Recommissioning
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Trier Puddy American Legion Post No. 75, Fond du Lac Eagles Club Aerie No. Z70, Fond du Lac Elks Lodge. 57, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fond du Lac Condemnation Commission, past vice president of University of Wisconsin Citizens Advisory Board Transportation Committee :If Midwestern Conference of County and State Governments, past chairman of American Red Cross, past vice president of Fond du Lac P.T.A. Education Council, Youth Activity Committee, Boys Little League Baseball and Football, and United Fund Board.
Survivors include his wife. two sons, James F. of Tracy, Calif., and John D. of Vacaville, Calif.; one daughter, Colleen Kreuser and her husband Donald of Greenfield ; nine grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; one sister, Eileen Liner of Van Dyne; nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and one brother.
