Robert Dycus Obituary:
Robert Carroll "Bill" Dycus, 81, a lifelong resident of Hammond, IN passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2003. He is survived by seven children, Carroll L. (Paul) Carter, Mary A. (Frank) Szyper, Bobby J. Dycus, Dorothy Kay Dycus, William J. Dycus, Janet Sue (Clayton) Randall and Davy Thomas Dycus; eight grandchildren, D. Jay (Nikee) Carnagey, Craig R. (Rebecca) Carnagey, Sarah A. Chambliss, Amy J. Carter and Alex, Iain, Rhys and Evon Randall; two great-grandchildren, Madison Sabena and Kenedi Reid Carnagey; one brother, James T. (Dorothy) Dycus; one sister, Catherine Dycus; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lucille (Thomas) Dycus. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 10:00 AM from LaHayne Funeral Home, 6955 Southeastern Ave., Hammond, IN with Dr. Eric C. Stumpf officiating. Burial, Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of the Calumet Area, 600 Superior Ave., Munster, IN 46321. Bill was a lifelong pilot, learning to fly as a young man at the Lansing Airport and making his first parachute jump in the area at the age of 20. He served as a flight instructor before he enlisted in the Army in 1942, serving in the 554th Army Air Force Case Unit in Tennessee. He met his wife, Mary in Union City, Tennessee while in the service and they were married on September 4, 1944 in Blytheville, Arkansas. After his honorable discharge, he procured a job with United Airlines as a Pilot in Salt Lake City, Utah. A few years later, he returned to the Hammond area, working as an airline pilot for North Central Airlines (now Northwest), flying out of Midway Airport and later O'Hare. After 30 years of service as a Captain with North Central/Republic Airlines, he retired in 1979 and joined the "Sitting Ducks"- the airline companies retiree organization.
