Major League Baseball Player. The second baseman-third baseman played the final nine games of the 1936 season with the Philadelphia Athletics, hitting .184 (7 for 38) with a double and three runs batted in. He then played in a Pacific Coast League-record 886 consecutive games for the Oakland Oaks from April 1, 1939 to September 12, 1943. He was drafted by the New York Giants and hit .254 in 111 games with 10 doubles, two homers and 35 RBIs. Luby spent 1945 in military service, but his big-league career was over. The right-handed hitter's lifetime totals were .247 with 11 doubles, two triples, two homers and 38 RBIs. He then played for San Francisco of the PCL from 1946 to 1948 and New Orleans of the Southern Association in 1949. He managed the Pelicans in 1950 but did not play, then became player-manager-general manager of Salem of the Western International League from 1951 to 1955. He racked up 3,169 hits as a minor leaguer (ninth on the all-time list), had 499 doubles, 111 triples, 99 homers, 1,045 RBIs and 381 stolen bases. He became manager of Eugene of the Northwest League from 1957 to 1959 before becoming the club's general manager. Following a two-year absence from baseball, Luby returned to Eugene in 1965 as manager-general manager. He was appointed president of the Northwest League in 1966 and helped Eugene net a Triple-A franchise in the PCL in 1969. He was the club's president and general manager for the first three years of its five-year stay in the league. He then was Eugene manager-general manager again when it returned to the Northwest League in 1974.
