Born in the village of Schweigern, in Baden, Germany. His last name was originally Thoma, the son of Johann Michael Thoma (burgermeister of Schweigern at one point) and Margaretha Appel Thoma. Left Europe from LaHavre, France and emigrated to the U.S. aboard the ship "Robert Kelly", docking in NYC on 01 Jul 1850. An older brother, Johannes (b-1823), later followed him to the U.S. in 1873. Philipp lived in NY for a while. He later moved to Skinner's Eddy, Braintrim Township, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, and being a rotgerber (tanner) by occupation, started a tannery there in 1863, which later burned down on 19 Nov 1879. The family then moved about Nov 1880 to a ranch (site of the Civil War Battle of Rich Mountain) in the Valley Bend area of Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia, where he and his wife later died and are buried. They had eight children. He was known as a stern man, and made his sons work hard in the tannery. Thus, the sons were not too sad when the tannery burned down.
