Obituary in The Ashville Home News Feb. 4, 1905:
"Mary Conrad was born in Rockingham Co., Virginia, Feb. 19th 1821, and died Jan. 12th at Lancaster, Ohio, aged 83 years 10 mos. and 23 days. She was united in marriage to John M. Green Aug 27, 1843. To this union were born 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters. The oldest son Noah died in infancy, the fourth son William, died 2 years ago. The living are Ephraim of Auburn, Nebraska, Henry of Commercial Point O, Sarah Jane Tipton of Shadeville, O., Joseph and Barbara Ellen Hoover of Commercial Point. Lucinda Meeker, of West Jefferson, Almeda Tipton of Matville, and Mary Ann Sullivan of Lancaster. The deceased emigrated to Ohio with her parents at the age of 10 years and settled on a farm in Hocking Co. She worked by the week for a livelihood and worked in the Pine Grove paper mill, also learned to spin, flax and wool, and to weave, linen and woolen goods and carpet which she followed after she was married until after the war of the Rebellion closed in 1865. She and her husband went to housekeeping on Broad Cole's farm two miles from Royalton in Fairfield county and lived there about 3 years, then moved to Hocking Co. and lived near a small, stream called Buck Run. In about 3 years moved 3 miles farther north in Goodhope Township on a small farm of 40 acres owned by his parents, which they afterward inherited, and bought at different times 240 acre tracts of land belonging to the same section, in 1865 sold the farm of 120 acres and rented land in Muhlenburg Twp., Pickaway Co., after 3 years moved to Scioto Twp. and lived in there with the exception of about 3 years until her death. The husband died 25 years ago and after that she lived with her children. She united with the New School Baptist denomination in Hocking Co., then with the Christian Union and later with M.E. Church at Commercial Point, O., was faithful to the church and always attended services as long as she was able, but for about twelve years was denied that privilege. Their home was often visited by ministers of the gospel. She leaves to mourn their loss, two aged brothers, eight children, fifty-two grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren. "The Golden Gates were opened, A gentle voice said come, And with farewells unspoken, She calmly entered home."
