Mortimer O. Tracy is of the old Tracy family from Connecticut. His parents died when he was only nine years of age, but relatives gave him the advantage of a splendid education. He was a lawyer, teacher and a civil Engineer. He practiced law in Vermont, Boston, New York, Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana. He became State's Attorney in Deadwood, SD. He was appointed the US Land Commissioner while located in Carter County, Montana. He first married Eliza A. Smith 17 Jul 1872 at Boston, Massachusetts. Mortimer and Eliza had daughters named Emma and Grace R. Tracy. Later Mortimer married Jeanne Thomas who is buried beside Mortimer.
