Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Bowman, 77, of Alexandria, Virginia passed away on December 20, 2014. Bobbie was born on February 10, 1937, in Grottoes, Virginia and was the daughter of the late DeWitt and Edith Showalter. She graduated from Montevideo High School in 1955 and from Pan American Business College in Richmond, Virginia in 1956.
On June 9, 1956, she married George Bowman of Port Republic, Virginia who preceded her death on January 30, 1973. She is survived by her two sons, Robert Lynn Bowman of New York, NY and Ronald Dee Bowman of Fulton, Maryland; her sister, Judith Thompson of Arlington, Virginia. An infant son, Kenneth, died in December 1964.
Bobbie was employed by the Department of Defense and worked at the Pentagon for forty-seven years, culminating as Executive Assistant to the Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She retired after a career in which she served senior military leaders such as Admiral William Crowe, USN, and Generals John Shalikashvili and Barry McCaffrey of then-Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard Myers, USAF, featured testimonials to Bobbie’s service from past and present leaders of the Department of Defense.
She loved being a career woman but mostly loved being around her family and friends, decorating her home and traveling to the beach.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
