He was Grand Master of Masons of the State in 1874.

The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 10 Oct 1888
The Late Judge Luke. Funeral Obsequies and Shipment of His Remains to St. Louis
The seating capacity of the Episcopal church was fully tested Sunday evening by a large assemblage that listened to the impressive funeral ceremonies over the remains of the late Judge John W. Luke, preparatory to their transportation to St. Louis for interment. The Rev. Mr. Clowes officiated, and in his brief and appropriate sermon paid a fitting tribute to the worth of the honored dead. After these sad rites had been performed, the remains were escorted to the depot by a large number of relatives and friends. The remains were accompanied east by Mr. R. A. Luke, a son of the deceased.
A kind neighbor, a good citizen, a trusted friend, a consistent christian and a doting father has gone forever from our midst. Full of years and honorable deeds he laid down a life unselfishly devoted to good works, and against which no word of reproach could be uttered. Peace be to his ashes.
