Robert served as a Staff Sergeant & Engineer / Gunner on B-26B #42-96132, 598th Bomber Squadron, 397th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Alabama prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 26, 1942 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Railroad Brakemen and also as Married.

Robert was "Killed In Action" when his B-26B crashed 400 yards off Friston, Sussex, England. They were attempting to return on one engine after being struck by enemy anti-aircraft flak.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

The body of Staff Sergeant Robert G. Hargrove of Decatur will arrive in Birmingham Tuesday night and will be taken to Brown's Funeral Home in Norwood.
Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Forest Hill cemetery, with the Ensley VFW in charge of military honors.

Sergeant Hargrove who was killed in the European theater, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rose Margret Hargrove of Birmingham ; one son, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hargrove of Decatur; and one sister.
He is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. McAllister and Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McGuigan, all of Huntsville.
