Richard died March 23, 1942 at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, two days after being injured in an airplane crash.
He was a passenger aboard B-26B Marauder #40-1531, when the twin-engine bomber crashed on takeoff from the Memphis Municipal Airport, due to a mechanical issue.
