The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Broadus R. McGinnis (ASN: 0-1314934), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on Hill 700, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 11 March 1944. With boldness and daring, Lieutenant McGinnis led his platoon up a steep slope in the face of bursting grenades and concentrated machinegun fire. When the summit was reached he charged over the crest and captured a strategic pillbox. From this vantage point he could observe hostile dispositions and direct he maneuvering of his troops. To accomplish this, he repeatedly exposed himself to communicate his orders and, in so doing, was killed by machinegun fire. Lieutenant McGinnis' devotion to duty and display of outstanding bravery in carrying the attack forward served as a fine example and inspiration to his men and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
